"Southern Nevada is often referred to as ground zero," Henderson, Nev., Councilwoman Debra March told consumers, reporters, and REALTORS(R) at the bus tour stop here. "We're first in foreclosures, we're first in lost property value, and we lead the nation in unemployment. But ground zero is where opportunity occurs."

Reaching home buyers with assistance and an understanding of the benefits of home ownership at a time when it's often less expensive to buy then rent in Nevada "will further stabilize neighborhoods," March added. "Henderson is prepared to partner with the NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF REALTORS(R) and the Greater Las Vegas Association of REALTORS(R) to identify opportunities and benefits" for home owners.

The Southeast Valley Regional Association of REALTORS® received a visit from the Home Ownership Matters Bus during its Oktoberfest & International Tasting soiree Friday evening. About 300 REALTORS® and affiliate groups sampled delectables from regions such as Norway, Mexico and everywhere in between. Desserts, brats, pumpkin soup, root beer floats - you name it, they had it! And all for a good cause, too! Proceeds - including the live and silent auction - went to SEVRAR Critical Needs Foundation, which benefits victims of natural disaster and emergency situations. Many stopped by to tour the HOM Bus and pick up some fun giveaways. Check out the theme booths, all put on by members and affiliates!

Pets are often the forgotten victims of foreclosures, left behind by families who have lost their home and can no longer take care of them. As a former branch manager in the mortgage industry, Jodi Polanski's eyes were opened to the plight of these abandoned animals. She decided to take action, founding the Lost Our Home Pet Foundation, which rescues pets left behind and places them in foster homes until they are adopted.

Home to the largest hot air balloon festival in the world, the Greater Albuquerque Association of REALTORS® welcomed the Home Ownership Matters bus in a big way - with two giant balloons celebrating Albuquerque and New Mexico's long-time tradition. Not to mention authentic breakfast burritos with none other than New Mexico's green chili. Yum!

 

About 60 REALTORS® attended the Monday morning event to talk about issues impacting the local housing market, restrictive lending conditions, and the potential severity that would be felt among their clients and home owners if the Mortgage Interest Deduction is reduced or eliminated.

Mortgage interest deductibility has been around for nearly 100 years, helping generations of Americans buy a home. It's not a factor in the country's current economic woes and shouldn't be on the table as a target for federal lawmakers looking for ways to close the budget gap.

That was the message delivered today by former NAR President Richard Mendenhall, speaking in Norman, Okla., today as part of the Home Ownership Matters bus tour. NAR's 2011 Regional Vice President Alan Huffman and Oklahoma Association of REALTORS President Hope White also made remarks during the stopover.

The Home Ownership Matters bus is traveling across country to spread the word about the value of home ownership.Oklahoma REALTORS are in Norman for their annual convention.
